Shauna's letter on Gratitude

Shauna's letter on Gratitude

I want to start by thanking all of you for all that you have done for me and my family these past 9 months, let alone my whole life! There are no earthly words to express my love and gratitude!

I am so very grateful for my Savior and for the gospel! I honestly don't know how anyone can go through loss without the knowledge that we have and mostly the atonement. Without it I don't know if I would still be here let alone be sane.

I am so very grateful for my Husband, and for every one of my children! And for the time I had with my sweet boy Bralyn. He brought so much joy to our family, he was always bouncing up and and, zooming through the house, and hugging us! Tynon still says, "Mom" I just felt and heard Bralyn Zoooom by saying, zoom".

All of your letters and talks on Gratitude have warmed my heart and soul! I am so grateful for such a wonderful family, the spirit is so strong with each and everyone one of you, and it lifts my spirits!

I love you all so very much!

With all the love in my heart,
Shauna

Madyson's Letter

Madyson is working on writing with a "main idea" and supporting sentences, so she thought she could choose only one thing she was grateful on and then support that main idea.

Gratitude

I am grateful for pencils, they give me something to write with color with and draw with. I just thank Heavenly Father for these wonderful things. I just think he loves us enough to give us pencils. He did this just for us. It is wonderful if you just sit down and write what you are grateful for.

When I tried posting as an attachment I couldn't open it. I don't know if it didn't go through or I was just doing something wrong. I posted it again by copying and pasting. Sorry for sending it twice :)

"A Prayerful Life is the Key to Possessing Gratitude."  These are not my own words, but President Monson's explanation of the meaning of a quote giving by President Joseph F. Smith.

Said he: "The grateful man sees so much in the world to be thankful for, and with him the good outweighs the evil. Love overpowers jealousy, and light drives darkness out of his life." He continued: "Pride destroys our gratitude and sets up selfishness in its place. How much happier we are in the presence of a grateful and loving soul, and how careful we should be to cultivate, through the medium of a prayerful life, a thankful attitude toward God and man!"

Reflect for a moment the type of people you love to be around. What do they all have in common? I would venture to say they are happy, loving individuals, with a positive outlook on life. Rather than focusing on what they don't have or what is wrong in their life, they focus on the good things in life and the blessings they have been given. In essence, they have cultivated an attitude of gratitude.

While there is so much evil in the world today, there is also so much good. Focusing on the little tender mercies we experience every day will not only lift us, but those around us as well.

A couple weeks ago I was complaining to Joel about my house we just moved into, and that I don't know how I will make it 2 more years here. -We live in a 4 story house that has me going up and down stairs CONSTANTLY. In the first 3 weeks of living here I fell down the stairs 3 times.  After the first time falling, I walked down so carefully each time, that I still don't understand why I fell two more times, and was terrified of how many more times I might fall in 2 years.- Joel's response was "Think about being homeless and living in a bug infested, flea ridden condemned building." I suddenly went from being very discouraged and just wanting to cry if I had to use the stairs again, to being very happy and had a great day. Just like that. The minute I felt truly grateful, I felt happy.

Elder Uchdorf beautiful worded, "How much of life do we miss by waiting to see the rainbow before thanking God that there is rain?" He continues, "Being grateful in times of distress does not mean that we are pleased with our circumstances. It does mean that through the eyes of faith we look beyond our present-day challenges."

Trials and difficulties of life will pass swiftly as we keep an attitude of gratitude.

I was so amazed at this experience, that my feelings and disposition could change so quickly, that I immediately called Debbie to tell her my experience. She too was excited to share that she and Kim had been recording every day how they saw the Lords hand in their lives on a daily basis. She challenged me to do the same, and it really does make a difference in keeping a positive and grateful perspective.

We have been counseled many times to count our blessings and to recognize the Lords hand in our lives. While this is very important, I love Elder Uchtdorfs suggestion to not just be grateful for things, but to be grateful  in our circumstances.

He says," Perhaps focusing on what we are grateful for is the wrong approach. It is difficult to develop a spirit of gratitude if our thankfulness is only proportional to the number of blessings we can count. True, it is important to frequently "count our blessings"—and anyone who has tried this knows there are many—but I don't believe the Lord expects us to be less thankful in times of trial than in times of abundance and ease. In fact, most of the scriptural references do not speak of gratitude for things but rather suggest an overall spirit or attitude of gratitude. Could I suggest that we see gratitude as a disposition, a way of life that stands independent of our current situation? In other words, I'm suggesting that instead of being thankful for things, we focus on being thankful in our circumstances—whatever they may be."

We all have different situations, and experience different trials, yet the promise stands for each of us that, "who [receive] all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto [them], even an hundred fold, yea, more."

I know we all want this promise, and the blessings of peace and happiness that can be experienced through gratitude. So, how do we attain an attitude of gratitude? Through prayer. Have your heart drawn out in thanks in all things and in all times and in all places to our loving Heavenly Father for all he gives and does for us, recognizing His hand in our lives each day. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Fwd: Thoughts on Gratitude

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: Thoughts on Gratitude
To: Craig Conover <cconover2@gmail.com>

I'm actually quite afraid of gratitude.  And I mean this very seriously.  Whenever I hear the advice that one should take the time to recognize the many blessings enjoyed in life.  I think, "That's nice; such good advice!  I will do that soon."  Even this invitation from Craig worried me.  I wanted to do it, but I also could see, if I was truly honest with myself, that I kind of hoped the opportunity would slip by, and my lack of contribution would go unnoticed.  Then came the reminder message from Craig, this morning.  Something like, (imagine the high-pitched, playful voice of a parent, calling out to a two-year-old, whose feet remain visible, though attempting to hide behind the couch) "I see you guys...yes Don, I see you too...come on out now and write something down for me."

If Gratitude were a place, I would liken it to the Temple.  I like to go to the Temple, but I often keep it at arms length.  The perspective of actually being in the Lord's house, is difficult to hold onto.  I can go there briefly, stand in awe for a moment, but then I need to return to a perspective that is more natural for me.  It's easier to think of the Temple as a beautiful building, spiritual to be sure, a place of prayer and contemplation, but more like an ornate chapel than an actual abode of the Most High God.  Gratitude too is easiest for me if taken in little doses.   Like my visit to the park the other night with Jeff and my kids.  They were doing the monkey bars.  The thought occurred to me that I could go over there and attempt a pull up.  But I was content to just HANG by my arms for a moment, pleased that my fingers didn't give way.

Deep gratitude, the kind I know my soul needs for the development of meekness and other essential virtues (as Craig so beautifully taught about) is hard for me.  Nephi says, "the guilty taketh the truth to be hard."  I can't shake how perfectly my experience fits with this description.   Gratitude, at it's finest, is seeing things as the truly are, seeing our own condition for how hopeless it is, and then seeing the Salvation of Christ for how all encompassing, and eternal, and glorious it is.  So if guilt prevents me from experiencing wholeness and truth, without being so overwhelmed that I hide behind the couch, then at least I can see where I need to go.  That's right, repentance.   So now I'm trying to find a better place to hide...ahhhh haaa, the dryer, Craig won't find me there!

"For whom the Lord loveth, He chasteneth."  Dryers are not the best places to hide...hot, cramped, and absolutely brutal once they are turned on.   It's like the Lord gives us places like dryers to hide so that we will realize, at some point, that hiding is not the answer.  I'm grateful for dryers; every attempt to hide in them reminds me to stop trying to find the easy way - because the easy way is harder, to stop just hanging from my arms - because there's no grow small endeavors, to stop treating sacred things casually - because if God just wanted us to have pretty things, he could have stopped at sunsets and flowers, whereas Temples bring us into His presence!

I love how life has so many days.  Today I can repent and step further into Gratitude.  And tomorrow, I can go further still.

A BIG thank you to those who have contributed thoughts on Gratitude.  And WOW, to read some of the profound insights of the children!  Yes Luke, "Gratitude changes everything!  Gratitude is like a light to happiness!"  And Chelsea, "Gratitude is turning sadness into happiness," how did you know that?!   Our children will bear up the Kingdom of God amidst the most severe attacks ever launched by the adversary, in the history of the world.   The heavens have dropped the best they have to fight these latter-day battles, and to think we get to have them as our children!  I can't even handle how grateful I am for that!

Family Letter

Dear Family and Friends,                                   November 21, 2014

I would like to begin with one of my favorite quotes...
"Thus, the Savior had suffered not just for our sins and iniquities - but also for our physical pains and anguish, our weaknesses and short-comings, our fears and frustrations, our disappointments and discouragements, our regrets and remorse, our despair and desperation, the injustices and inequities we experience, and the emotional distresses that beset us," by, David A. Bednar.

I am so grateful for the Lords atonement in my life.

This past year was a roller coaster ride, I have had a lot of up's and down's. The Lord will not give us more then we can handle, this past year I feared that the Lord thought I was stronger then I felt. We are told to prepare for natural disasters; I believe the Lord prepared me as much as possible to pass through the heart ache and hardship of this past year. This same year I have been given so many miracles. I have been humbles by the love and support of so many kind individuals. I know that God hears and answers prayers; my prayers have been answered in miraculous ways time and time again. Through it all my prayers have changed, I pray for His will more because I know he is aware of me.

I have been trying to focus on the Lord's tender mercies. I have started recording them in my journal, and so by doing have been in a state of gratitude. Jesus gave thanks for the fish and bread before he broke them to feed 5,000. Only after he gave thanks for what he had, did a miracle follow.

Russell M. Nelson said, "We live to die, and we die to live again. From an eternal perspective, the only death that is truly premature is the death of one who is not prepared to meet God." I am so grateful I had the opportunity to know and love Bralyn. Bralyn was full of love and life. Loosing Bralyn has been heart breaking. My prayers and thoughts constantly go out to his family. My heart is full of gratitude for Shauna and Cliff. They have showered us with Christ like love. The scriptures teach us to loose ourselves through the service of others, and to love another. They have been perfect examples of this to my family. I am eternally grateful for their love and kindness.

"The Savior teaches that we will have tribulation in the world, but we should "be of good cheer" because He has "overcome the world" His atonement reaches and is powerful enough not only to pay the price for sin but also to heal every mortal affliction," by, Dallin H. Oaks. I believe the best way to "be of good cheer" is to have a heart full of gratitude.

Love you all,

Kimberly Coates

Sherri's thoughts on Gratitude!

Gratitude!?
It must be a spiritual truth because I get teary just thinking about it!
But since I am sitting her by myself at 5am, I will do my best to pull myself together and write my thoughts!
As always I have loved reading the thoughts of Debbie, Kristina, and Craig!  I just want to say THANK YOU ... and add my own.."Amen!", "Amen", and "Amen"!
I am truly THANKFUL for my  siblings who bless my life everyday!!

When Craig first asked us to write our thoughts on Gratitude, I thought to myself...Gratitude is a GIFT!  For some it's a TALENT!
It's not easy for some to find Gratitude, which was vocalized by my little 7 year old daughter, Annika. In her own sweet words, she tried to express her struggle to be grateful. It's not that she doesn't try, in fact, she has to try extra hard, because it doesn't come easily to her. My heart ached as I typed her sincere thoughts. For I had not recognized this struggle, or at least I hadn't internalized it. (Now looking back I can see her struggle...and thankful for this challenge, which brought it to my attention, so I may help her!) It's interesting that at the young age of 7 she is able to recognize this!

Then I thought about Luke, who is one who exposes weaknesses in himself and then tirelessly works to make them strengths! I remember a few years back, when he struggled to see JOY in anything...I would tell him that it's ALL about HIS ATTITUDE! He has worked hard on his attitude, often coming to me for advise. Through his own words, I can see and feel his constant and conscious efforts to adjust his attitude. As I typed his own words, I was thrilled to hear that at the TERRIBLE gym he was able to find 2 funny kids to enjoy!  I immediately envisioned him hanging out with his 2 new friends, most likely his age, throwing the football or playing a game of basketball!  I was shocked to learn that his 2 new funny friends were a 1 year old baby who spits all the time, and a young girl! I could now clearly see that his options were limited and he had to make a choice, be miserable or find a way to enjoy the company that he had. His attitude didn't change the fact that the gym is "boring", but it allowed him to enjoy himself despite the "terrible" conditions!

Then there was Brady, who is much like myself! Love all....therefore full of gratitude...and in return has happiness!
Like Brady I believe that the Lord gave me Gratitude as a talent. However, I have strong memories of being a young girl and committing to myself to find JOY in everything! I can remember consciously working on my attitude. I avoided negative thoughts the same way I tried to avoid evil, mostly because I viewed them as evil, something that was trying to destroy my happiness!
My kids today will ask me how to get a swear word out of their mind? My response is, pray, sing, quote scriptures or uplifting quotes!  When they ask me how to change their attitude, I tell them the same exact method! Don't dwell on the negative and if it WON'T leave you alone, remove it with prayer, singing, or scriptures! These thoughts are poison to our minds, souls, and lives! I have learned through practice to not allow them to be present!  I am thankful for Pollyanna's inspiration as a little girl, she may have been fiction, but I believed her attitude was a real achievable item!

We are learning a new gratitude quote each day this month and then we practice them on the way to school. I have watched the kids mouth them during different situations! :)  As I read Chelsea's thoughts on gratitude...I couldn't help but smile to see that she has really worked hard to grasp a hold on a THANKFUL heart!
Some of my favorite of the quotes are....

If you want to find Happiness, find Gratitude!

Start Everyday off with a Grateful heart!

What if you woke up today only with what you thanked the Lord for yesterday!"

Gratitude Changes Everything!

Gratitude turns what you have into Enough!

Now Let's look at the opposites of these...I love opposites...it exposes the harsh truth!
What would life be without GRATITUDE!

If you want to find sadness, find something wrong with today!

Start everyday off with an angry heart!

What if you woke today, with all the problems you focused on yesterday?

Anger changes everything!

Jealous turns what you have into nothing!

Gratitude is an eternal Christlike attribute. Seek after it with all the energies you posses!  Teach your kids....first by example, and second through gentle guidance to find happiness through gratitude!  Keep a gratitude journal (via Debbie), Take time to make a list of the GOOD IN TODAY (via Kristina), pray for assistance, and it will come here a little there a little! (via Craig)

The Lord is knocking, open the invitation to let him in, he is the Ultimate Master, and will lead YOU...first by his example...and second with gentle guidance!!!

Annika's Thoughts on Gratitude!

I help my mom and I eat her food!
I love one another!
My mom makes me laugh.
I have a lot of gratitude right now...because I am laughing right now!
I love being a girl, because I love putting make up on, I love girls stuff, and I love everything that girls do...
I love my sweet little brothers!
I have hard times showing gratitude. Sometimes you can do it great...and sometimes you can't!
Sometimes you mess up!
Sometimes you just show gratitude....just try to show gratitude!
Follow your heart...dowhat your heart says!
You could probably ....actually you sometimes cry and then you can not cry and show gratitude!
Today I complained to Chelsea and I want to tell her that I am sorry!
Don't have this situation like me!
And you can show gratitude too!
It's easy!  Well sometimes it can be HARD!
Show gratitude to your mom and everyone!
Don't struggle like me!
That's all I got!

Gratitude: The Catalyst of Discipleship

Gratitude: The Catalyst of Discipleship

When I extended the gratitude challenge, I had no idea what I was going to write about it. As a matter of fact, I was getting a little nervous because day after day, I had nothing. In the second session of the Phoenix Temple Dedication the Spirit opened my understanding in part to what gratitude really was. That night, I began to write my thoughts down and it was absolutely amazing, the spirit just began to teach me. Day after day my understanding of gratiitude grew. What was interesting was that I had to progress to a certain point before the next door of understanding would open. Truly, the Lord gives "unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little" (2 Nephi 28:30).

Catalyst is defined as: "something that causes activity between two or more persons or forces without itself being affected. (dictionary.com).

We are all familiar with the Moroni challenge found in Moroni 10:4-5, but I wonder how often verse 3 gets missed or overlooked altogether. I always share verse 3 when I share the Moroni challenge with a non-member. There is something personal and special, to point out that God, in His wisdom has given the Book of Mormon to them at this time to read. Plus, I feel that it begins to soften their heart and prepares them for the next two verses. While this may be true, I believe it is much more than that though. I think it helps everyone, members and non-members alike to prepare for and opens the door to the influence and the power of the Holy Ghost along their pathway to discipleship. Moroni 10:3 reads,

3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

Before I continue, let me tell you a story to strengthen my point. You already know the story, so bear with me.

I took Kiera to the doctors for an ultrasound visit. We knew something was wrong when the Ultrasound tech asked Kiera, "Who told you that you were pregnant." After a long time she sent us back to the doctors office without telling us anything. We were very concerned. The doctor told us that our sweet Alexa was a tubular pregnancy and showed us a close up picture of the ultrasound where she was located in the tubes. He said that there was a heart beat but that there was no way to save the baby. Reluctantly, we headed over to the hospital for the surgery. We were living in Illinois at the time and so we asked the missionaries to come and help me give Kiera a priesthood blessing. It was hard watching them wheel her off, so I did the only thing I could do; pray. After the surgery the doctor came in and related to us what had happened. He told us that there's a tool that they normally use which scrambles everything up and would flush out the baby even if it was in the uterus. He said, "Something told me not to use that tool." He went in with tweezers and went up and down both tubes and couldn't find our baby. He called in another doctor to get a second opinion and he couldn't find the baby either. They even did an ultrasound to see if they could find the baby in the uterus and couldn't find our baby. I have never heard of a doctor losing a baby before, but that is what happened. We came back a week or so later and there was Alexa, in the uterus, as if nothing had happened. We knew that she wasn't lost. The Lord in His mercy chose to miraculously save the life of our sweet miracle baby, Alexa.

Now with this new perspective let's look back at Moroni 10:3, "remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men." After my previous story, does this not have a much different or deeper meaning? One thing is for sure; I will never, and I mean never, just simply "remember" this experience. When I remember, my heart literally swells within me with gratitude to my Lord and my God for his mercy and love for me and my family. There are not words sufficient to express the gratitude and love I feel for my Savior for this one act of mercy, let alone all the acts of mercy towards all the children of men.

Moroni gives us direction to help us remember correctly when he said, "and ponder it in your hearts." Going through an experience requires less pondering than one we just read or heard about. Talking about the coming of Christ on the earth, Alma said, "Would to God that it might be in my day; but let it be sooner or later, in it I will rejoice" (Alma 13:25). Why will he rejoice? Because, he has given himself to much pondering to the extent that Christ had become real, as if He had already come among him. Mosiah teaches us this concept too:

13 And the Lord God hath sent his holy prophets among all the children of men, to declare these things to every kindred, nation, and tongue, that thereby whosoever should believe that Christ should come, the same might receive remission of their sins, and rejoice with exceedingly great joy, even as though he had already come among them. (Mosiah 3:13)

To sum it up so far, when we remember and ponder in our hearts, our thoughts are instinctively drawn to gratitude and love for that thing. With this in mind, I would like to further demonstrate the power that gratitude has in our lives. To do this, let's turn back to the scriptures.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
(1 Corinthians 13:13)

You might be wondering what faith, hope, and charity have to do with gratitude. But, the question you should be asking is, what does gratitude have to do with faith, hope, and charity? A slight variation makes all the difference in the world. Moroni will be our guide, but first, Joseph Smith gives us great clarity in unlocking Moroni's words.
7. The author of the epistle to the Hebrews, in the eleventh chapter of that epistle and first verse, gives the following definition of the word faith:
8. "Now faith is the substance (assurance) of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
9. From this we learn that faith is the assurance which men have of the existence of things which they have not seen, and the principle of action in all intelligent beings.
10. If men were duly to consider themselves, and turn their thought and reflections to the operations of their own minds, they would readily discover that it is faith, and faith only, which is the moving cause of all action in them; that without it both mind and body would be in a state of inactivity, and all their exertions would cease, both physical and mental.
Lectures on Faith, Lecture 1

Now back to Moroni 7:40-44. I will try to simplify the concepts as we go along and I will also draw a parallel between faith and hope in Christ to obtain eternal life with faith and hope in studying for a test to get a good grade. Also, notice the role that gratitude plays during the whole process.
40 And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you concerning hope. How is it that ye can attain unto faith, save ye shall have hope?
We develop faith for things that we want to have hope in. Remember Joseph Smiths words above. Gratitude is born, because there is a way and means to achieve what you want.
  • If I study hard (faith) for the test, I can get a good grade (hope). I want a good grade therefore I study. I am grateful that I am able to study to achieve a good grade.
41 And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.
We hope to obtain eternal life and this because of our faith in Christ that he is able to save us. As we remember and ponder His life we are filled with great gratitude for Him, which strengthens our faith and hope.
  • I can get a good grade on the test (hope) and this because I have the best study guide (faith in). I am so grateful that such a study guide exists to study from. My faith and hope is strengthened.
42 Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.
We have faith in Christ, because of who he is and what he overcame, which means eternal life is possible. Because Christ exists -- Eternal Life exists. Gratitude continues to build and strengthen faith and hope.
  • Because the best study guide exists (faith) -- Good Grade exists (hope). Gratitude continues to build and strengthen faith and hope.
43 And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.
44 If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity...
(Moroni 7:40-44)
I looked up meekness in the Guide to the Scriptures and the first word defining meekness was "Godfearing." The scriptures are filled with references of fearing God. The archaic (very old) definition of fear means: to regard (God) with reverence and awe. In order to do this, one must have a deep and abiding gratitude for God. Meekness is the fruit of gratitude, and the prerequisite of charity. Meekness, is Godfearing, submissive, willingness to be taught and to be obedient to God.

Lowliness in heart is the opposite of pride. Gratitude is being grateful for someone or something besides yourself. When we are grateful for something we develop a love for that someone or something other than ourselves. Charity is the pure love of Christ which is pure love for others.

We have faith in Christ because of His power to save us from our sins and to rest our souls in the mansions prepared for the righteous, which is eternal life. Because of our faith and hope, we gladly submit to His will (with gratitude in our hearts) and are willing to obey His commandments and to be taught how to be like Him; to qualify ourselves through His grace to live the life He lives, even eternal life.
  • I trust in the study guide (faith in and gratitude for) because it contains sufficient knowledge to secure a good grade (hope). Because of my faith and hope, I am willing to submit myself to sufficient study (faith, cause of action) and am willing to be taught the knowledge it contains (meekness).
Verse 44 contains another powerful key, "if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ..." Moroni 8:26 helps to unlock this key:

26 And the remission of sins bringeth meekness, and lowliness of heart; and because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost, which Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love, which love endureth by diligence unto prayer, until the end shall come, when all the saints shall dwell with God.
Moroni 8:26

How does the remission of sins bring meekness? Very simply, because when one receives the remission of their sins, his or her's whole soul is filled with gratitude and love for Him who is able and who has power given to Him by His Father to forgive sins, even our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thus, gratitude springs forth within him, giving birth to or greatly enhancing his sense of awe and reverence towards God, which begats meekness and lowliness of heart, and "because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost, which Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love."

The climax of the whole topic is this: Faith, hope, meekness (fruit of gratitude), and charity can only grow or deminish as fast or as slow as each otherIndividually and collectively they are proportionally linked. "One for all, and all for one." For if one grows dark, they all grow dark. On the other hand, if one grows lighter, then they all grow lighter, in direct proportion to the growth of the one. And this is how men rise or fall.

To bring this talk to a full circle, I am convinced that the Lord prompted Moroni to put verse 3 in the 10th chapter of Moroni before verse 4-5 for a very specific purpose. To prepare the reader for their journey of faith in Christ and their hope of receiving all the promised blessings, even life eternal. This through their remembering and pondering, which fills their souls with gratitude, which begets meekness and lowliness in heart, which opens the door to the visitation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the truthfulness of Him and His power to save us. All of these forces working individually and collectively together, thus developing true disciplship in Christ.

I don't know about you, but I am just blown away at how embedded gratitude is in discipleship. It truly is the catalyst of discipleship. I want you all to know how much the Gospel means to me and my family. I love the Savior and try to emulate His example. I loved learning about gratitude and testify that as we embrace an attitude of gratitude, the Lord will begin to use us in miraculous ways to build His kingdom in these last days. I say these things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Debbie's Thoughts on Gratitude for Real this Time

SEEING THE MIRACLE THROUGH EYES OF GRATITUDE.

Inspired by Elder Eyring's talk in the October 2007 conference I started a practice of writing down ways that I see the hand of the Lord in my life each day.  It has been a beautiful practice that ultimately has helped me to realize how involved He really is in our lives. As I look back on my journal entries I can see clearly that God is a God of miracles. In Mormon 9:19 we learn that God has always been a God of miracles. "And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles."

So what does this have to do with Gratitude? Elder Eyring says it best from his own experience. "Before I would write, I would ponder this question: 'Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?' As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. As that happened, and it happened often, I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done.

More than gratitude began to grow in my heart. Testimony grew. I became ever more certain that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. I felt more gratitude for the softening and refining that come because of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. And I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance—even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened." As we can see from Elder Eyring's experience, our gratitude will increase as we take the time to stop and notice all the Lord has done for us. As we notice all the Lord has done for us we can not help but notice that all those little tender mercies are His miracles in our lives. Therefore, we are seeing His miracles through eyes of gratitude.

I have a great love for my Savior. His enabling power is real. I have felt it and recorded it in my journal entries. Some days I am in pain and all I can do is kneel down and ask for help to get out the door and go grocery shopping. Without fail I receive strength. It rarely happens until I have exerted my own best efforts and then He takes over and makes the rest of the task easier. My journal is full of stories like this. It is full of evidence of His enabling power. It is full of miracles. Though they may seem small, they are gifts just for me and for that I AM GRATEFUL!!!!

I bare testimony that Jesus Christ lives! He loves us! He wants us to see how important we are to Him.  His miracles are evident in our lives everyday, we just have to take the time to notice and then thank Him for them.

Gratitude is like happiness!
Gratitude changes everything!
If your showing gratitude your showing happiness!
Gratitude is like a light to happiness!
If you show gratitude your in good shape!
Jesus wants you to show gratitude!
All of us can get better at gratitude!
Gratitude is a days smile!
Gratitude is the BEST!
If your sad, find gratitude!
I wish you could have gratitude too!
Walk in the Lords way and do the things that he tells you and do gratitude!
A smile is a good way to show gratitude!
I find gratitude by finding happy stuff in things.  Like at recess I had no one to play with so I find fun stuff to do on my own!  I decided to just practice my form on football, and I had a lot of fun!
When my friends were over, I just wanted to play football, they wanted to chase the dog, and I still wanted to play football, then after they chased the dog, they wanted to play hide and seek, and I was begging them to play football, and finally they played it, and I didn't want to play football anymore, and they wanted to. I decided to go with what your friends want so that I could enjoy them while they were here!
Well, we use to be at lifetime fitness. At lifetime, I played basketball, I went to the daycare, and we did all that fun stuff. Then we switched to Gold's gym. At first I didn't really like it, the second time, my mom took us, and she forgot my football cards, which is what I was going to do to have fun!  They don't have very much fun stuff, and at lifetime they had video games, a baby place, a jungle gym, basketball gym, and tons of stations that we could go to, like karate, sports place, yoga, and ballet, and tons more!  Now I'm stuck at Gold's gym. I was thinking of a way to have fun, and then I thought of a way! First do push ups, sit ups, planks, laps around the table, wall sits, and then I found a way to have fun without all working out!  I decided to play basketball by the baby hoop. Then I went back to doing my workouts! The good thing is I found a couple of really funny kids! One was a 1 year old who spit all over the place. The other one was a little girl who was funny! I really enjoyed that! The reason this fits into gratitude is because I changed my attitude about how terrible of gym this is. I can't lie it's not the best gym. But I did have a little fun there! Then my mom said she was sorry she forgot my cards. I told her I was bored. But really I was sooo bored! I did enjoy a lot of stuff! While I was there I met 2 funny people, talked to my brothers and sister, worked out and did laps, played basketball, and I sat there and thought about all the fun things I might do in the future!
I guess that wraps it up!
The end

Chelsea's Thoughts on Gratitude

Gratitude (What gratitude means to me
Gratitude is turning sadness into happiness, it's when you have hard times and are still grateful and thankful. You have gratitude. Gratitude shows your appreciation, gratefulness, thankfulness, and care towards others and oneself. It's how you feel!  If you are thankful, gratitude shows your appreciation and love. It's such a strong word to me, and tells me that the world should always be finding gratitude!  If you want to find happiness, find gratitude. Find something to be thankful about and be grateful for.

If your feeling down find gratitude. Gratitude changes days, and even lives. It shows who you are, it shows passion and love! Not everyday may be perfect or be necessarily good, but with gratitude in your heart you can always find something good in every day. You can make it perfect! Gratitude can turn anything and anyone into something great! It transform the normal, and usual days into thankful and loving days! With just a little gratitude you can turn a rainy, muddy hike in the forest into an amazing adventure with many obstacles to climb. This can happen by just a couple of thoughts and words of gratitude! Gratitude is a powerful and reliable course for the rest of your life, that can change you ad all those around you!

START YOUR DAY WITH GRATITUDE!!
